Curley (Jack) Goswick
Curley Jackson (Jack) Goswick was born December 1, 1921 in
Tecumseh, Alabama. He was one of the first shipmates on the USS Nassau; the
muster roll shows his first received on board date as 8/21/1942. He
served on the Nassau through much of 1943. He was a Water Tender Second Class
assigned to the engine room. A memorable experience for him was crossing the
Equator.
Prior to joining the Navy,
he worked in the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps)
Camps in California
planting trees. (This was one of President Roosevelt's work camps.)
He married Lessie Daniel from
Cedartown, Georgia in 1946 and with her raised three sons: Wayne, David,
and Raymond. They resided in the Greater Atlanta area. He has numerous
grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In his later life, he was married to
Frances Frazier.
He loved Atlanta sports teams such as:
Atlanta Crackers and
Atlanta Braves baseball,
Atlanta Falcons and Georgia
Tech Yellow Jackets football. He had a great
sense of humor and a
contagious laugh - he once took his three sons to see the Beatles live in
Atlanta Stadium (1965) and spent the entire concert laughing at the screaming
girls.
He retired from the
Sheet Metal Workers International Association, Local Union #85. A proud
accomplishment for him was participating in the laying of gold leaf on the dome
of the Georgia state capitol building in the late 1950's.
Jack Goswick died on March 10, 1977 in Lithia Springs, Georgia of a heart
attack.
