Hugh R. White

Hugh was born in DeNoya, Oklahoma on June 2, 1924.  he enlisted in Kansas City, Missouri on April 10, 1943.   His Naval Training was at Farragut, Idaho. From there he was stationed with CASU  5. He aboard the U.S.S. Nassau from Aug.  1943 until Feb. 1945. He served in the V-1 Division . He was then stationed at a forward air base in the Mariana Islands. He was honorably discharged from Miami, Florida on March 1, 1946. His class was Aviation Metalsmith 3C. He was awarded the World War II victory medal, American campaign medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon and the Naval Commendation Medal.

 As a child I remember him telling me about the flying fish that would follow the ship. He didn't talk much about the war while he was alive, especially to me being a young child. Family members have said, that he told them that it had been the war that made him grow up very quickly.

Hugh married Lena Thomas on September 18, 1951. They had one son Kirk. They were divorced in 1953. On December 27, 1957 he married Sylvia J. Doughty in Newkirk, Oklahoma. They settled in Wichita, Kansas and had three children: Rebecca, Richard and Robyn. Through his children he has five grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Hugh died on February 18, 1972 from a stroke at the age of 47. At that time he was the owner of Hugh R. White Insurance Company. His insurance company dealt with small business insurance. (Submitted by Hugh's son, Richard.)
