I was born on September 8, 1924 in Danville, Virginia. I enlisted on June 23, 1943 in Danville, Virginia and was sent to boot camp at NTC In Great Falls, Illinois. I came aboard the U.S.S. Nassau in June 1944 (2nd Division) and performed the duties of Wheel House Watch at Sea, 1st Loader - 40mm. The most memorable event for me was when we crossed the Equator. I was discharged from the Navy on March 13, 1946 at the rank of Coxswain V6 USNR. I married Evelyn Mangrum, on September 20, 1946, in Danville, Virginia, and we have one son, David.
