Recollections of a Volleyball Match against the Enterprise
On Thanksgiving day 1942, while anchored at Noumea, New Caledonia, our team was invited by the USS Enterprise for a match. We had dinner on the Big "E" and then proceeded to beat them. The Big "E" had been damaged by a bomb through the flight deck near mid ship, with extensive damage on the flight deck and below. This damage resulted from enemy action in the Solomon Island Area.
