On December 7, 1941 Pearl Harbor was bombed by Japan. On December 8, 1941 I was knocking at the Navy Recruiting Office to enlist in the Navy. On January 3, 1942 I called to report to Seattle for my physical ;and on January 4th  was called to report for enlistment into the U.S. Navy.

I reported to San Diego Training Station for Boot Camp. After Boot Camp, I was assigned to Seaman Guard Company and patrolled the base. In July I was transferred to Bremerton, Washington to the Nassau. I became a Chief Ship fitter in "R" Division, in May of 1946.

After the war ended I made the trip to China to drop off a Marine Squadron. On the way back I re-enlisted.

The Nassau departed Alameda, California and headed for Bremerton, Washington on May 13, 1946, for decommissioning. On October 28, 1946 she was decommissioned, and I entered the Pacific Reserve Fleet at Tacoma, Washington.

I was assigned duty with the Pacific Reserve Fleet from October 28, 1946 until August of 1951. On August of 1954, I was assigned to the U.S.S. Genessee AOG-8, in charge of "R" Division and Assistant Cargo Officer. In February 1956, I was transferred to the Pacific Reserve Fleet at Tacoma, Washington for another tour of shore duty for two years. In February 1958 I was transferred to the U.S.S. Bexar-237 in charge of "R" Division. I made E-8 SFCS on December 16, 1959. On June 29, 1960 I transferred to the U.S.S. Nereus AS-17. In February 21, 1962 I was Honorably Discharged to the Navy Fleet Reserve.

Walter Cubula passed away December 19, 2006 in San Diego , Ca.
