Walter B. Fry
I was born in Greeneville, Tennessee on December 21, 1924. I attended Greeneville High School, and enjoyed playing football.
On December 7, 1941 World War II broke out. I was seventeen, about to turn eighteen in a few weeks. I quit school and went to Nashville, Tennessee to join the Navy, as I didn't want to be drafted. I joined the Navy In January of 1942, and was sent to San Diego for .
I was in training for six weeks, and then went to North Island for six more weeks. I went aboard the U.S.S. Nassau in April 1943.
I was in the 1st Division, as a Seaman first class. I crossed the Equator five times, and we were out for six months before coming back to shore.
I got off the U.S.S. Nassau in Oakland, California in August 1945 and went home on leave. It took me five days to get home, and two days later the war was over.
I had to report to Carnot Amix, when I came off leave. It was part of North Island and I spent two months there. I was sent next to Millington Navy Base, Memphis, Tennessee where I was discharged.
I met my wife, Elizabeth Williams, while stationed in the Air Force in Goldsboro, North Carolina. We were married on February 10, 1962. We have three children, two sons and a daughter. We have two granddaughters and one grandson.
