Don Hummel

I entered the Navy in January 1944, and went to Boot Camp at Farragut, Idaho. My first duty station was CASU # 1 at Ford island, Hawaii, beginning in April 1944, for six months. My second duty station was aboard the U.S.S. Nassau, which was a six month temporary duty in "V" Division, and then back to CASU for a short time. My third duty station was aboard the U.S.S. Sitkoh Bay CVE-86, until the end of the war. I was discharged from the Navy on April 29,1946.

After discharge, I worked at Maytag for approximately one year. Then I went to college for one year; moved to Odessa, Texas and worked for Sinclair Oil for another year, after which I returned to Iowa. I worked for the Maytag Company for 17 years, as an Industrial Engineer and Production Supervisor, and I owned my own business for 13 years.

I married Betty in 1952. (Will be 50 fabulous years in 2002!) We have 7 children, three girls and four boys. We have 17 grandchildren and one great-grandson.

It has been a great life, and I often think of some of the guys I served with — God Bless all of them.
