George A. Oberst
I was born in Kingston, Pennsylvania on March 18, 1925. I entered the Navy on July 24, 1943; went to Boot Camp in Sampson, New York, and school in Bainbridge, Maryland.
I came aboard the U.S.S. Nassau on August 4, 1944. I was put in the "S" Division, and told to report to the Aviation Storeroom. Bob Kuhns, SKiC was in charge of the storeroom. My first job was to chip and paint.
I moved into a new "S" Division compartment. I had a top bunk, a baker slept along side of me, and another on the bunk under me. (I wonder if you were one of them, Sam?) We cross the Equator on August 31, 1944, and I was initiated into the Ancient Order of the Deep.
When Bob Kunhs was transferred, I was put in charge of the Aviation Storeroom, made Aviation Storekeeper 3rd Class, and was able to move in and bunk in the Storeroom. Later, I was promoted to Aviation Storekeeper 2nd Class. I stayed in the Storeroom until June 2, 1946, when I was discharged at Bainbridge, Maryland on June 20, 1946.
I married Helen Miller on November 1, 1947 in Conyngham, PA. We have a son and a daughter, and one grandchild, Ryan Oberst.
