Reunion 1991

The 1991 U.S.S. Nassau (CVE-16) Reunion was held in Honolulu, Hawaii at the Hyatt Hotel on December 4-11, with a total of 47 in attendance. 1991 was the 50th Anniversary of the Bombing of Pearl Harbor by the Japanese.

We toured the Arizona Memorial, Honolulu and the Punch Bowl Cemetery on December 5th. On December 6th, we took the Grand Circle Island Tour. To go any where on December 7th was almost impossible because of the huge parade down Kalakua Blvd. President Bush was also in Honolulu, as well as the many, many Pearl Harbor survivors. During that time, we were interviewed by Harold Greene of Channel 7 News. On December 8th, we took the Pearl Harbor Cruise. What a great time to be in Hawaii!

Shipmates in attendance at our fifth reunion were W. Alerich, H. Barger, J.P. Binion, J. Brito, V. Butler, D. Christensen, T. Calleo, J. Coe, J. Duncan, H. Hanson, T. Hennessy, B. Ingraham, C. Jordan, R. Kleinspehn, R. Morris, L. Novotny, C. Price, L. Rafferty, J. Rappenecker, C. Ross, I. Thomas, W. Zink, S. Moore, and my daughter, Kathy.

Our speaker was John Finn who holds the Congressional Medal of Honor for being wounded seventeen times during the attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese on December 7, 1941.

At the Invocation, the Nassau Chaplain, Wilbur Zink remembered those who had passed on since the last reunion. They were George Kachelhoffer, Elmer McPerren and Wilbur Walsh.
